Founded about a century ago by bonsai growers following the Great Kanto Earthquake, Omiya Bonsai-cho has become one of Japan’s best-known centers of bonsai culture. Its peaceful, tree-filled streets and traditional bonsai nurseries offer a glimpse into a side of Japan that most visitors never see.

Led by a professional bonsai grower with over 15 years of hands-on experience, your experience combines seeing, learning, and doing:

1. Explore Bonsai City
Visit the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum and historic local bonsai nurseries with your expert guide. See remarkable bonsai up close while learning about their history, techniques, and the Japanese aesthetic behind them. Discover how generations of bonsai growers have cared for and shaped these living works of art.

2. Experience Bonsai Hands-On
Go beyond simply looking at bonsai and experience working with them yourself. Under the direct guidance of your professional bonsai grower, you’ll learn how bonsai is cared for and try essential techniques such as pruning, trimming, and shaping with wire. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how careful maintenance and skilled techniques bring out the beauty and character of each tree.

Whether you are completely new to bonsai or already fascinated by this traditional art, this experience lets you see, understand, and work with Japanese bonsai for yourself.

JR Toro Station is easily accessible from central Tokyo, taking about 40 minutes from Shinjuku or Ueno Station by JR train.
From the station, you’ll enter the peaceful streets of Omiya Bonsai-cho, known as “Bonsai City.” Away from the crowds of central Tokyo, this quiet, tree-filled neighborhood is home to historic bonsai nurseries and the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum.

- Mr. Jun — Professional Bonsai Grower with 15+ Years of Experience
Growing up as the son of a professional plant farmer, bonsai has been a natural part of my life since childhood. With over 15 years of hands-on experience learning and working with traditional bonsai, I have developed a deep, lifelong connection to this living art.

During the experience, I’ll take you beyond simply looking at bonsai. I’ll share how bonsai is appreciated, how these living works of art are cared for, and the techniques used to shape and maintain them. You’ll also have the opportunity to try essential bonsai techniques yourself, with hands-on guidance along the way.

My goal is to help you see, understand, and experience Japanese bonsai from the perspective of someone who has grown up surrounded by plants and has spent many years working with this traditional art.

Incredible Bonsai experience with Jun
We had an excellent and in-depth tour and experience with Jun, who has been studying Bonsai for 10 years. He was super knowledgeable and friendly and answered 1,000 questions. We loved the hands on lesson at the beautiful Toroto café, and enjoyed exploring the Toro neighborhood. Highly, highly recommend for this interested in bonsai!

Great bonsai experience!
This tour was a great experience getting to see all these little masterpieces. Jun promptly met me at the train station and gave a brief history on the walk to the nursery. It ended up just being me on the tour that day, which was nice having a one-on-one. Once there, he discussed the proper way to appreciate a bonsai and he answered all of my questions as we looked at all the different varieties of trees. You can tell he truly enjoys working with bonsai and was very knowledgeable. From there, we moved on to the bonsai museum which had some truly impressive trees. We talked about the different shapes and ages of the bonsai there and even the maintenance of them. After that, we moved on to the workshop portion. This was held at a cute cafe where he already had multiple younger trees set up to work on. We practiced wiring/removing and how to pick the correct branches/buds to remove. I recently got a new bonsai and this workshop has made me more confident in caring for it. If you’re looking for some pointers or even just interested in this amazing art form, I would highly recommend this tour. Definitely worth the train ride from Tokyo.

Jun was a great host! He was very knowledgeable with 10 years of Bonsai experience. He pointed out the various different parts of a Bonsai, what makes them more special, and how people care for them among other really interesting fun facts. Then we got to learn more about how to delicately create our own bonsai from choosing the branches to trim, to wiring them into a good shape! Overall, it is a great value for the money and well worth the train ride out there.

This experience was very high value for the cost and I highly recommend anyone considering it to go for it.
We were met by Jun-san in the station, he walked with us to the Bonsai sanctuary where he has worked for 10 years. We had a private tour where he shared all of his knowledge and answered all of our questions gladly.
Afterwards we went to the Bonsai museum which was stunning, and the information we learnt there confirmed what we had already taught us.
Following this we had a beautiful time learning how to take care of and develop Bonsai in a beautiful cafe.
The education was guided with clear instructions, patience and pictures from a lovely japanese Bonsai book.
Afterwards we enjoyed a lunch with Jun-san in the cafe and exchanged language and culture.
We really enjoyed our time and appreciate the care and attention given to us, we felt the Bonsai.
We also received great pictures afterwards for our memories.

Jun is one of the warmest hosts I have ever met through Airbnb and he really knows his stuff! He was so patient to indulge all of my many, many technical questions as we toured the local bonsai gardens, and the experience of actually getting to get hands-on with some trees and learn the maintenance and the artistry was one-of-a-kind. I had a passing interest in bonsai before, but I really walked away from this experience not only with a greater depth of appreciation for bonsai as an art form and a hobby, but a real motivation to take it up and practice it myself. The Bonsai gardens that we visited are exceptional places and the guide, who trained at one of the best gardens, provided insightful knowledge about the trees and techniques. This was a very cool experience! Jun is a friendly guy who knows his Bonsai stuff. Had great conversations with him and he was able to answer all my questions. The gardens we visited first were nice. I think you can find them on Google maps but the added benefit of this experience is that you get to learn how to appreciate bonsais probably. After the garden we went to a cafe for a workshop. I got to work on 3 bonsais, 1 was 10 years old! Cutting branches, trimming leaves and manipulating the shape and direction of several parts of the trees. It was super fun. The location was a bit further from the major tourist attractions, but it was nice to experience some local life. I recommend to go 30 min early to hang out there a bit and also to get lunch in the cafe the workshop takes place. great value, highly highly recommended!

5 Star experience with Mr. Jun-san. From the visit at two Bonsai gardens to the hands-on experience with Jun,
it was a fun educational experience well worth the time.
Also, if you wish to stay at the cafe after the hands-on experience,

My husband and I did this workshop with our 11-year-old daughter. All three of us loved it.

Great experience! It was great fun to learn how to appreciate bonsai, and it was informative to try my hand at pruning and shaping. If you've thought about getting into bonsai, but weren't sure where to start this is a good option.
Make sure to prepare for the weather - it was quite hot when I went and I shouldve brought a hat and a fan.
